MDT strives to empower individuals in body and mind through dance education and creative movement. We inspire community wellness and the continued development of performing arts in Petersburg.
We are incredibly excited to officially announce that MDT met our matching grant fundraising goal!
Between our Dance Camp, sold-out Take & Bake Lasagna Fundraiser, and generous donations from individuals and local businesses, our community showed up in a BIG way to help us reach this important milestone.
A very special thank you to Petersburg Mental Health Services, Inc. for providing this matching grant opportunity and investing in MDT, our dancers, and the future of our organization. Their generous support allowed every dollar our community raised to go even further toward helping MDT secure a permanent home.
To everyone who donated, participated in camp, bought a lasagna, volunteered, shared our fundraisers, or helped spread the word — you were a part of making this happen.
Reaching the match is a HUGE milestone in our building campaign. We still have more work ahead as we continue raising funds toward the purchase of our building, but today we are celebrating this incredible community effort.

Our Journey
Today’s Mitkof Dance Troupe began in 1996 as Steppin Out Dance Studio, the first performing arts school in Petersburg, Alaska. It was owned and operated by our founder, Melinda Anderson, and governed by a student-led board.
In 2013, Steppin’ Out Dance Studio became The Mitkof Island Dance Troupe, a non-profit organization run by a volunteer board of community members. Mitkof Dance Troupe has gone from 1 to 5 teachers and our student body is now over 125 students.
